1. After the Urologist has given the patient a dose of general anaesthesia, he/she places a scope through the urinary opening into the bladder and then passes it through the ureter. It is finally placed into the urine-collecting part of the kidney.
2. The scope has a small camera fitted at the end. This camera is used by the urologists to spot the kidney stones. There is a monitor screen present in the surgery room that displays the entire anatomy of the patient’s kidney captured by the scope. The urologists find the stones through this and carefully note down their size.
3. Once the stones are spotted, next step is to crush them into fine powder or pieces. This is done through an ultrasound wave or a laser probe. Also, these fine pieces can pass easily through the urination process, if left behind.
4. At last, a stent is attached to the urinary tract of the patient for 10/20 days so that he/she does not face any problem while urinating and the stone pieces can pass easily through the urine.

Precautions

There are no major precautions to be taken after and before this treatment. Few pre-cautions are-

1. The patient is advised to drink a lot of water after the treatment, for easy outlet of the crushed stone pieces.
2. The patient is kept under observation for two days only. This is done to ensure that he/she develops no sign of infection.
